Albany 2013 Bribery

What is truly fascinating however, is watching these corrupt politicians get caught and subsequently wired up to drag down their colleagues with them.

"All you gotta do is tell me what you want in the bill, and the bill drafter will put it together," Stevenson allegedly told a cooperating witness who was the go-between for the lawmaker and the businessmen. Go To Site

Ah, it seems like only yesterday we were reporting on New York politicians being arrested for corruption and bribery. I exaggerate of course. It was a full 48 hours ago. Not to be outdone, Democrat Assemblyman Eric Stevenson, along with four others, including a government witness who also serves in the Assembly, are looking at federal bribery charges. Go To Site

“There are few among us who can stand up to 20, 30, 40 years [in jail] without, as the streets call [it], snitching,” Sanders said. Recording conversations for law-enforcement, he added, is “even more tragic if you’re trying to buy down your sentence by ensnaring others.” Doing that, Sanders insists, “proves you have no honor.” -Sen. James Sanders (D-Queens) Go To Site

Nine New York City Democrats, including state senators, a city council member and two political operatives, were secretly recorded by a former lawmaker seeking leniency for her role in a corruption scandal, and nearly all of them are under criminal investigation, according to court documents filed Wednesday.

A second Democratic Bronx assemblyman, Nelson Castro, said a few hours later that he would resign effective Monday. In a statement, Castro said he had been assisting law enforcement officers "with various investigations aimed at rooting out public corruption" following his own indictment in July 2009 on perjury charges related to a civil case involving election fraud... Castro's work with the authorities and his resignation will earn him a "non-prosecution agreement" from the Bronx district attorney's office and the U.S. Attorney. That deal will cover his 2009 indictment as well as "certain other offenses," according to the complaint.

Assemblyman Eric Stevenson, a Democrat, faces federal charges for allegedly taking $22,000 in bribes from the operators of a string of adult day care centers in exchange for favors, including the crafting and submission of legislation designed to enrich the businessmen. A second Democratic Bronx assemblyman, Nelson Castro, said a few hours later that he would resign effective Monday.... Stevenson's charge for drafting and introducing the legislation was $5,000 before the bill went in and another $5,000 after, the complaint alleges.

Late this past summer, Shirley Huntley (D-Queens) took the rare step of holding a press conference to announce that she expected to be arrested in the coming days. Sure enough, Huntley was arrested and charged with evidence tampering, conspiracy in the fifth degree, and falsifying business records. At her booking and fingerprinting, Huntley commented that she was “having a great day”. ... Huntley pled guilty earlier in the month to embezzling nearly $90,000 in taxpayer money to a non-profit founded by her daughter.

Looting lawmaker Shirley Huntley loaded up on fancy clothes and spa treatments — and that was just for her pet poodle. The former state senator, who admitted stealing taxpayer cash for shopping sprees, took along her BFF, Assemblywoman Vivian Cook, to go bargain hunting at the Tanger Outlets mall in Riverhead, LI, a source said... Huntley, 74, also loved fancy champagne and expensive cigarettes, the source said. Huntley, who left office at the end of last year after losing a primary battle, pleaded guilty earlier this month to a federal charge in connection with embezzling $87,700 in taxpayer money from a nonprofit founded by her daughter.-New York Post

Revealed in the complaint brought by the U.S. attorney’s office was a conversation Stevenson had with a witness, in which they discuss the recent release of former State Comptroller Alan Hevesi from prison. Stevenson, in the act of committing corrupt actions, tells the witness that half of Albany would probably be in prison if they were ever caught committing their corrupt acts.

They've been charged with taking bribes, lying under oath, even trying to buy their way into office — but until now, there has never been a political corruption case in New York like this. State Sen. John Sampson was charged Monday with embezzling $440,000 and using some of it to bankroll a bid for one of the highest law enforcement jobs in the city, Brooklyn district attorney. And when he feared getting caught, he told an associate he could track down informants and “take them out,” according to an indictment unsealed Monday.

Sen. John Sampson (D-Brooklyn) is identified in court papers as asking ex-Sen. Shirley Huntley (D-Queens) to wield her influence on behalf of a businessman who held a Kennedy Airport lease in March 2012. The FBI is also examining a $100,000 ‘loan’ Sampson took from a legal client. It was revealed Friday that Huntley had been wearing a wire in a corruption probe to catch fellow politicians.

A press conference will be held today to announce the unsealing of federal corruption charges against New York State Assemblyman Eric Stevenson and four other defendants. Stevenson is accused of taking bribes in exchange for official acts, which included drafting, proposing, and agreeing to enact legislation that would benefit the co-defendants’ businesses. Two of the other defendants are also charged in connection with their payment of a bribe to another Assemblyman, who was actually cooperating with the Government at the time.

Turn over the names of all of the cooperating witnesses who could make a case against him, Mr. Sampson asked, so he could arrange to “take them out.” That is among the crimes Mr. Sampson, a powerful Democrat, is accused of as he tried to thwart an intensifying federal inquiry centered on accusations that he had stolen more than $400,000 from the sale of foreclosed homes... He pleaded not guilty to charges that included two counts of embezzlement, five counts of obstruction of justice and two counts of making false statements to the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Albany: Almost a quarter of the state Senate's Democratic conference was in the FBI's cross hairs last year, according to a court filing unsealed Wednesday. Last summer, federal investigators asked state Sen. Shirley Huntley to invite six Democratic colleagues to her Queens home and record their conversations... Prosecutors have already indicted two of the taped senators, John Sampson of Brooklyn and Malcolm Smith of Queens, but the memo listed four more colleagues: Eric Adams and Velmanette Montgomery of Brooklyn, Jose Peralta of Queens and Ruth Hassell-Thompson of Mount Vernon. Gov. Andrew Cuomo called the situation "complicated, but basically all bad." "I'm just happy that all of this is coming to light, and we're working out the bad apples," said Sen. Tony Avella, D-Queens. "Let everybody wear a wire. It really is the tip of the iceberg — whether it's taking a bribe or pushing a bill for a campaign contribution, it's all unethical."
