Even though U.S. officials tell NatSec Daily and others that evacuation flights from Kabul will be free, people trying to catch a plane in the Afghan capital say differently. One person said State Department staff were seeking large payments — up to $2,000 — from American passengers and even more from non-U.S. citizens.

  When we relayed what this person told us to the State Department, a spokesperson didn’t deny that this is happening.

  “U.S. law requires that evacuation assistance to private U.S. citizens or third country nationals be provided ‘on a reimbursable basis to the maximum extent practicable.’ The situation is extremely fluid, and we are working to overcome obstacles as they arise,” the spokesperson said.

  In other words, the Biden administration may request payments for evacuation flights.

Rep. Greg Murphy, R-N.C., is one of many members of Congress involved in the ongoing effort to help get Americans and U.S. allies out of Afghanistan, but in his office, it’s a group effort.

  After the Biden administration ordered a complete withdrawal of all U.S. troops from the country by Aug. 31, officials estimate at least 100 Americans, according to White House chief of staff Ron Klain, and thousands of other Afghan allies are still trapped within Afghanistan’s borders under the Taliban’s rule.

  "Our State Department has been deplorable. Their response — if they do call back — has been utterly deplorable," Murphy said of his office’s efforts to help those left in Afghanistan.

  The Department has been overwhelmed with requests for help, and Murphy added that the U.S. no longer has any "assets" on the ground in Afghanistan.

  Former White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows tweeted: 'American citizens are still stranded behind enemy lines in Afghanistan, and meanwhile Joe Biden is vacationing in Delaware.'

  'Joe Biden left Americans hostage in Afghanistan. No speech, press release, or Biden family vacation in Delaware can change that.'

  Alabama Representative Mo Brooks also pointed to the Americans who were left behind. He tweeted: 'Joe Biden will be spending his weekend on vacation in Delaware. Roughly 100 Americans will be spending their weekend abandoned in Afghanistan.'
