Environmentalists Trash North Dakota

In the last year, thousands of people have flocked to North Dakota to protest a pipeline they claim could contaminate water.
But they’ve left behind enough detritus that they’ve risked causing an environmental disaster for the Missouri River
.

In a twist of supreme irony, the radical left-wing activists who protested the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL) near Native American land because of its alleged environmental threat have themselves created an environmental crisis.

On Wednesday, North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum signed an emergency evacuation order for the Oceti Sakowin protest camp, close to the Standing Rock Lakota reservation. Go To Site

Sanitation crews are working hard to dispose of six months' worth of garbage from a community the size of Wahpeton or Valley City. The mountains of debris need to be moved before the spring thaw occurs.

Making a dent in the immense amount of trash being hauled out of the Oceti Sakowin protest camp is being hindered by the weather. All the garbage that was left behind is now frozen into massive chunks of junk.

According to cleaning crews, they're worried they might even find dead bodies among the piles of refuse that now pollute areas where anti-pipeline protesters camped out for months.

"It's estimated it will take 250 trucks filled with litter to clear the camp," according to a local NBC affiliate. Once the spring thaw comes, the area could be at risk of major environmental damage. "In a month, all this trash could become toxic." Go To Site

Authorities in North Dakota are working to prevent an environmental catastrophe caused by the massive amounts of trash left behind by anti-oil pipeline protesters, local media report. State and tribal sanitation crews are rushing to remove piles of waste and debris left over from the protests against the Dakota Access Pipeline before weather warms and the mountains of trash turn toxic.

In the last year, thousands of people have flocked to North Dakota to protest a pipeline they claim could contaminate water. But they’ve left behind enough detritus that they’ve risked causing an environmental disaster for the Missouri River, North Dakota’s governor said in a statement this week.

The state has seen record snowfall this year, which has buried huge amounts of trash, camping materials and even vehicles abandoned by protestors.

“Because of this risk of flood, we’re worried about what’s going to be left at the camp,” the Standing Rock Sioux’s tribal chairman, Dave Archambault, told the Bismarck Tribune earlier this month. “What we want to do is make sure none of that waste gets in the Missouri River. …

Protesters at the Dakota Access Pipeline – calling themselves “Water Protectors” – reportedly left the land they lived on while they were protesting the construction of the pipeline destroyed and trashed...

However, when the land was cleared out it was revealed that the protesters – who had shown up to protect the land – had destroyed the land they lived on, leaving behind mountains of trash and human waste. Furthermore, it was reported that the protesters camp was situated on a “sensitive wildlife habitat.”

According to the Col John Henderson of the US Army Corp of Engineers, crews have already removed some 250 truckloads of trash, but his agency plans to spend upwards to $1.2 million of taxpayer money to rehabilitate the area. “To ensure that none of this garbage and waste and debris and structures and vehicles ended up in the reservoir. That would be an absolute environmental catastrophe,” Henderson said.

"This is probably the biggest ecological mess on the entire Missouri River system from top to bottom in this country."

Rarely does an incident so perfectly illustrate the utter hypocrisy of the Left. Activists who said DAPL shows no respect for Native land have trashed that very land.

Activists who declared they were there to protect the water have left fossil fuel-filled cars, human waste, and garbage leaking into that water.

Federal and state officials announced plans Wednesday to accelerate cleanup at a camp in southern North Dakota that has housed hundreds and sometimes thousands of Dakota Access pipeline opponents. Officials fear the camp near the Cannonball River will soon flood due to warm weather and rapid snowmelt. They worry trash and debris left behind by people who have left in recent weeks might pollute the Missouri River and other nearby waterways...

Local and federal officials estimate there’s enough trash and debris in the camp to fill about 2,500 pickup trucks. Garbage ranges from trash to building debris to human waste, according to Morton County Emergency Manager Tom Doering.

Dakota Access Pipeline protesters were finally evicted from their camp last week, but workers in the immense cleanup operation have had to help out some freezing four-legged residents that were abandoned. Volunteers with the Furry Friends Rockin’ Rescue have found eight abandoned dogs — six of which are puppies — since campers vacated the premises.

With the volume of refuse left by protesters prompting cleanup teams to use heavy machinery, the conditions in the camp challenge even these experienced animal-rescue workers. “It’s a mess down there, so it’s really, really hard to find these animals and get them,” Julie Schirado told KYFR, a station based in North Dakota.

Dakota Access pipeline protesters abandoned several dogs and puppies before being evicted from their makeshift campsites, according to volunteers helping to clean up the area... The abandoned pets are a bit weather-beaten but otherwise fine. Two of the rescued dogs, for instance, have shown symptoms of frost bite and patchy fur.

Picking up and uncovering waste and belongings is what many people are doing at the Oceti Sakowin Camp - the area where Dakota Access Pipeline protesters were camped out for months - and the work will continue for weeks to come...

About 100 people have helped in clearing the camp. Besides the amount of trash and belongings, other challenges make it more difficult. Having to chip away at snow and ice to remove trash is slowing the cleanup process; some say it will take weeks for the camp to be cleared.

"It's unfortunate. Again, that just goes against what they're fighting against, is leaving that stuff and abandoning it and obviously the environment the river."
