In “The Godfather Part II,” a senator from Nevada is portrayed as corrupt. His name is Pat Geary. In real life, a senator from Nevada is a jerk. His name is Harry Reid. -Richard Cohen, Washington Post Go To Site

Well, I don't think there's anything behind it. He hasn't produced any evidence. I'm telling you, authoritatively, speaking on behalf of the Governor that these charges are untrue, they are baseless, and there's nothing to back them up. And again, this reminds me of the McCarthy hearings back in the 1950s. And it was another son from Massachusetts, Joseph Welch, who finally asked the question that should be asked of Harry Reid, which is: Have you no sense of decency, sir? Is there nothing that you will not do in the name of dirty politics? I think it's just shameful, and of course, it's directly contrary to the new kind of politics that Barack Obama promised the country four years ago. Go To Site

President Obama’s campaign has imitated the dishonesty of his super PAC, to judge from a fact check of a “badly misleading” television ad that comes very close to accusing Mitt Romney of committing tax fraud. “There’s so much deceit here we hardly know where to start,” explains Brooks Jackson at FactCheck.org, which is run by Annenberg Public Policy Center. He’s commenting on a new ad that strongly suggests Romney committed tax fraud.

Now, Harry says he's in possession of this information because an old business crony of Romney's, whom Reid won't name, made that statement in a phone conversation that Reid won't document. In fact, Reid has no proof whatsoever that what the unidentified caller allegedly said in that unverified conversation containing the unsubstantiated claim has any merit at all... Nor did Reid explain how the IRS has somehow overlooked a decade of missing tax returns from a multi-millionaire who's this administration's main political opponent.

Jon Stewart ridiculed Senate Majority leader Harry Reid last night for accusing Mitt Romney of not paying any taxes for 10 years. “Here’s a rule of thumb, if you have to follow your claim with the words, ‘I don’t know if this is true’ then shut up.” Stewart said, comparing Reid to Donald Trump. Stewart then launched a segment called “You Harry Reid are Really Really Terrible” and proceeded to ridicule Reid. “You’re the Senate Majority Leader, you can’t just run to the Side-Boob Gazette with ridiculous speculations,” Stewart said, jokingly referring to the Huffington Post.

"I am not basing this on some figment of my imagination," he told Nevada reporters on a conference call, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. "I have had a number of people tell me that." He declined to name his source. "I don't think the burden should be on me," he said. "The burden should be on him. He's the one I've alleged has not paid any taxes. Why didn't he release his tax returns?"

WASHINGTON -- Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid took his jihad concerning Mitt Romney's personal finances to the chamber floor Thursday, repeating his unsubstantiated claim that the wealthy Republican paid no federal income taxes for 10 years.

He said a person who invested with Bain Capital called his office. "Harry, he didn't pay any taxes for 10 years," Reid said the unnamed investor told him. "He didn't pay taxes for 10 years! Now, do I know that that's true? Well, I'm not certain," he said. "But obviously he can't release those tax returns. How would it look?" "You guys have said his wealth is $250 million," he said. "Not a chance in the world. It's a lot more than that. I mean, you do pretty well if you don't pay taxes for 10 years when you're making millions and millions of dollars." Go To Site

Reid's most recent remarks have been criticized as deliberately provocative, if not reckless, speculation. The majority leader said he was told that Romney "didn't pay any taxes for 10 years" by someone who invested with Bain Capital, Romney's former private equity firm. But Reid hasn't named names, and went so far as to admit that he didn't know if his information was accurate.

Harry Reid is a senior U.S. Senator and a member of the Democratic Party, as well as an attorney at law and has a net worth of $5 million. Harry Reid has earned his net worth through his lucrative career in politics, and as a city attorney in his early years. He also served as Lieutenant Governor of Nevada in 1971. In 1977 he began serving as chairman for the Nevada Gaming Commission, and held this position until 1981. He’s been accused of trying to increase the value of his own property by having a bridge built between Nevada and Arizona. He was also accused of using campaign contributions for personal use, and in using his political power to help a friend who is also one of his son’s (an attorney) clients to build a golf course. Other accusations include taking donations from four Indian tribes during the Jack Abramoff Indian Lobbying Scandal and it was proven that Reid had a general increase in Indian contributions during that time.

Reid, who refuses to release his own tax returns, has refused to provide proof of his Romney tax claim and hasn't revealed the identity of the person who allegedly gave him the information. Nor did he explain how someone who invested in Bain, which was Romney's firm, would know the details of Romney's personal income taxes... "Harry's going to have to describe who it is he spoke with because, of course, that's totally and completely wrong," Romney said. "It's untrue, dishonest and inaccurate. So I'm looking forward to have Harry reveal his sources and we'll probably find out it's the White House."

Mitt Romney today released his 2011 tax return (FAQ). Curiously, the 2011 estimated return released in connection with Romney's extension reported $20,901,075 AGI, over $7 million more than the $13,696,951 AGI reported on his 2011 return as filed. $1.75 million of that amount represents a foregone charitable deduction:
• The Romneys donated $4,020,772 to charity in 2011, amounting to nearly 30% of their income.
• The Romneys claimed a deduction for $2.25 million of those charitable contributions.
• The Romneys’ generous charitable donations in 2011 would have significantly reduced their tax obligation for the year. The Romneys thus limited their deduction of charitable contributions to conform to the Governor's statement in August, based upon the January estimate of income, that he paid at least 13% in income taxes in each of the last 10 years.

Harry Reid owes Mitt Romney an apology. The Romney campaign on Friday released details of the Republican nominee’s 2011 federal tax return, along with a signed letter from his tax advisers attesting to the fact that Romney paid taxes from 1990 to 2009. Their statement flatly contradicts Senate Majority Leader Reid’s unfounded and baseless assertions, made repeatedly over the last several months, that Romney paid no taxes at all for 10 years.
