The New York Times on Friday walked back a story slamming UN Ambassador Nikki Haley — issuing a lengthy editor’s note confessing that they unfairly blamed her for blowing big bucks on curtains for her East Side pad when in fact the curtains were ordered during the Obama era.
The paper originally reported that the State Department spent $52,700 on “customized and mechanized” curtains for an apartment across from the UN on the East Side of Manhattan where Haley lives.
A spokesperson for Haley had said plans to buy the curtains were made during the Obama administration, and the Grey Lady in the note admitted that they were mistaken for putting Haley under the spotlight.
It's easy to spot a political hit job when you know what to look for. The telltale signs might include a steady trickle of negative information, an echo chamber focusing on the same story at the same time, or even a seemingly coordinated move from one "breaking" story to the next...
The most effective smear includes a smattering of facts, spotty allegations, and doctored quotes that fit a predetermined narrative. The "breaking" story usually comes from the biggest sympathetic media outlet that won't ask too many questions.
The hook doesn't have to prove anything; it just needs to be salacious enough to gain traction. The narrative carries with other reporters and media types politically interested in affirming it. - Cameron Smith
The case is clear. Katie Couric, a person Yahoo employs to be the face of its news division, was caught in a grotesque deception. Then, when she was publicly exposed, rather than apologizing, she doubled down — defending the choice to cast innocent Americans as ignorant rubes rather than allowing them to speak for themselves. She has lost her credibility. -David French
