In 2004, Sanders stood behind fellow veteran John Kerry as the Massachusetts senator accepted the Democratic Party's nomination for president.

“This is the hardest moment of my life,” Sanders told Whelan. His years commanding a Swift Boat in the Mekong Delta during the Vietnam War – which earned him the Silver Star, Bronze Star, Purple Heart as well as Navy commendations – were “a walk in the park” compared to this, he said.

Wade Sanders, deputy assistant secretary of the Navy in the Clinton administration, is set to be sentenced today in San Diego federal court for his guilty plea to possession of child pornography. Sanders, 68, was found with more than 600 images of child pornography on three computers, including pictures and videos of adults engaging in sex acts with children, during an FBI raid of his home. Some of the children were as young as 6 years old, according to court documents.
