We just got the facts wrong. The narrative was right, but the facts were wrong.
The Gang of 88 was a group of 88 professors at Duke University who signed an inflammatory advertisement that appeared in the Duke Chronicle (the university’s student newspaper) shortly after black stripper Crystal Gail Mangum falsely claimed she was raped by white members of the Duke lacrosse team. 
Duke University administrators and professors maligned the lacrosse players as racists and rapists, since Mangum is African-American. The lacrosse season was cancelled, and the team's coach was forced to resign before the students even had their day in court. -Ashe Schow
Weeks before any indictment was issued, in disregard for due process, our own professors projected guilt onto our peers on the lacrosse team.
In the ad they not only tacitly supported the accusations of the now utterly discredited accuser, but praised protestors who similarly rushed to judgment, while levying baseless accusations of racism against our student body.
The narrative was properly about race, sex and class. . . . We went a beat too fast in assuming that a rape took place. . . . We just got the facts wrong. The narrative was right, but the facts were wrong.

District Attorney Mike Nifong was disbarred Saturday for his "selfish" rape prosecution of three Duke University lacrosse players — a politically motivated act, his judges said, that he inexplicably allowed to fester for months after it was clear the defendants were innocent.

While Nifong wreaked havoc in the lives of the three Duke players that he had indicted for allegedly raping a black stripper and sparked racial debates throughout the city of Durham for more than a year, the former prosecutor only spent 24 hours in a North Carolina jail.
How many mandates concerning safe, responsible campus citizenship must be transgressed by white athletes' violent racism before our university's offices of administration, athletics, security, and publicity courageously declare: enough!
LIES! You are just a provacateur on a happy New Years Eve trying to get credit for a scummy bunch of white males! You know you are in search of sympaathy [sic] for young white guys who beat up a gay man [sic] in Georgetown, get drunk in Durham, and lived like “a bunch of farm animals” near campus.
I really hope whoever sent this stupid farce of an email rots in .... umhappy [sic] new year to you ... and forgive me if your really are, quite sadly, mother of a “farm animal.”

We stand by the claim that issues of race and sexual violence on campus are real, and we join the ad's call to all of us at Duke to do something about this. We hope that the Duke community will emerge from this tragedy as a better place for all of us to live, study, and work.

The 88 signatories affirmed that they were "listening" to a select group of students troubled by sexism and racism at Duke. Yet 8 of the 11 quotes supplied from students to whom these professors had been talking, 8 contained no attribution -- of any sort, even to the extent of claiming to come from anonymous Duke students.
How soon will confidence be restored to our university as a place where minds, souls, and bodies can feel safe from agents, perpetrators, and abettors of white privilege, irresponsibility, debauchery and violence?

Investigators say the victim is Mangum's boyfriend and say they believe the stabbing occurred during an argument at the apartment the couple shared. According to arrest warrants, Mangum stabbed the man repeatedly.

Crystal Mangum, the former stripper who falsely accused members of the Duke University lacrosse team of sexually assaulting her in 2006, is competent to stand trial on murder charges in the death of her boyfriend, a Durham judge ruled Wednesday. The ruling is the latest troubling news for Mangum, 33, in the wake of her role at the center the Duke lacrosse scandal. Mangum, an African American, accused three white lacrosse players at the prestigious private university of raping her at a house party.

A jury found Crystal Mangum guilty of second-degree murder Friday for stabbing and killing her boyfriend, Reginald Daye, in 2011. After Superior Court Judge Paul Ridgeway sentenced Mangum to 14 years and two months to 18 years in prison, deputies immediately led her handcuffed out of the courtroom.

"The stunning things about the Duke lacrosse rape fraud were not merely that a dishonest, politically motivated DA and a rogue cop almost succeeded in framing totally innocent young men as perpetrators of a fabricated gang rape, but mainly the disgraceful conduct of more than 100 Duke professors and administrators and most of the national and local news media," Taylor said.
"Motivated by politically correct animus against white male college athletes, they formed themselves into a rush-to-judgment mob and did their best to ruin the lives of the falsely accused young men — even after the evidence of their innocence was clear in the public record."
Campus feminists desperately want “rape culture” to be a reality, and so they invent phony rape stories from Duke to the University of Virginia, making sure to target fraternities and sports teams, which are to them symbols of patriarchy. -Kevin D. Williamson
