The face of feminism.

You know the famous episode in which Susan B. Anthony was arrested for illegally voting? The evidence against her was a note she sent to Elizabeth Cady Stanton, informing her that she had "positively voted the Republican ticket — straight."

A useful definition is this: “Feminism is the words ‘I Want!’ in the mouths of three or more women, provided they’re the right kind of women.” Feminism must therefore accommodate wildly incompatible propositions — e.g.,

  (1) Women unquestionably belong alongside men in Marine units fighting pitched battles in Tora Bora but (2) really should not be expected to be able to perform three chin-ups.

Or: (1) Women at Columbia are empowered by pornography but (2) women at Wellesley are victimized by a statue of a man sleepwalking in his Shenanigans.

And then there is Fluke’s Law: (1) Women are responsible moral agents with full sexual and economic autonomy who (2) must be given an allowance, like children, when it comes to contraceptives. -Kevin D. Williamson Go To Site

It was always the proper mission of feminism to attack and reconstruct the ossified social practices that had led to wide-ranging discrimination against women. But surely it was and is possible for a progressive reform movement to achieve that without stereotyping, belittling, or demonizing men. -Camille Paglia Go To Site

Online feminism is full of "essays by people who feel emotionally savaged by their involvement in it — not because of sexist trolls, but because of the slashing righteousness of other feminists." -Ann Althouse Go To Site

The president himself, however, has a well-documented history of excluding women, especially on the golf course. Obama played 23 rounds of golf between January and October of 2009 before inviting a single woman to his foursome, the New York Times reported. This was emblematic of broader concerns over the president’s preference for the company and advice of men...

Numerous studies done between the 1980 and 1994 report that lesbian relationships have higher overall rates of interpersonal aggression (including psychological aggression/emotional abuse) than heterosexual or gay male relationships. Furthermore, women who have been involved with both men and women reported higher rates of abuse from their female partners.

Meta-analyses of sex differences in physical aggression to heterosexual partners and in its physical consequences are reported. A 32-nation study of violence against dating partners by university partners found that about a third had been violent, and most incidents of partner violence involve violence by both the man and woman, according to Murray Straus, founder and co-director of the Family Research Laboratory at the University of New Hampshire. The second largest category was couples where the female partner was the only one to carry about physical attacks, not the male partner. Straus’ new research also found that dominance by the female partner is even more closely related to violence by women than is male dominance.

Three women arrested for assaulting a gay man at a Boston subway station say they can’t be charged with a hate crime because they are lesbians. Erica Stroud, 21, sister Felicia, 18, and Lydia Sanford, 20, are facing hate crime charges of assault and battery that, with convictions, could result in 10-year prison sentences, according to the Boston Herald.

Prosecutor Lindsey Weinstein said the women punched and kicked the unnamed man at a station in Jamaica Plain, all the while using anti-gay slurs. The assault allegedly occurred after the man, who suffered a broken nose, bumped into the women on a staircase.

New research partially funded by the National Science Foundation and published in the Personality and Social Psychology Bulletin says that as soon as women start thinking about love, science and math quickly flee their thoughts.

As a combat-experienced Marine officer, and a female, I am here to tell you that we are not all created equal, and attempting to place females in the infantry will not improve the Marine Corps as the Nation’s force-in-readiness or improve our national security... Which once again leads me, as a ground combat-experienced female Marine Corps officer, to ask, what are we trying to accomplish by attempting to fully integrate women into the infantry? For those who dictate policy, changing the current restrictions associated with women in the infantry may not seem significant to the way the Marine Corps operates. I vehemently disagree; this potential change will rock the foundation of our Corps for the worse and will weaken what has been since 1775 the world’s most lethal fighting force. -Capt Katie Petronio

It’s one of our current ironies that the same liberal people complaining that there are not enough women CEOs seem to harbor a special contempt for the women CEOs we do have. Slaughter stumbled onto a truth that many are reluctant to admit: women are less inclined than men to think that power and status are worth the sacrifice of a close relationship with their children. Academics and policymakers in what’s called the “work/family” field believe that things don’t have to be this way. But nothing in the array of work/family policy prescriptions—family leave, child care, antidiscrimination lawsuits, flextime, and getting men to cut their work hours—will lead women to infiltrate the occupational 1 percent.
