Intellectual Thuggery

This new form of an old disorder also shows that despite the orthodoxy on many campuses many left-liberals remain very afraid of classical liberal and conservative dissent.-John O. McGinnis

Last week, activists at Dartmouth College reacted to notices of Republican-sponsored events by vandalizing property and harassing conservative students.

Like so many other woke fits pitched by Democrats and their fellow travelers, the infantile behavior was driven not by policy differences but instead by primitive impulses, which have come to be regarded by the ruling class as acceptable responses.

Administrative bodies, like bias incident response teams, are established at social justice universities to deliberately punish any student or faculty member who dissents.

Social justice advocates call names, brand unwanted speech as violence, claim civility is complicity, demand safe spaces, engage in bullying tactics known as cancel culture, and use “inclusion” policies to silence any viewpoints they disagree with.

These tyrannical methods stifle free speech and even free thought on college campuses.

As a young Marxist in college during the 1950s heyday of the anti-Communist crusade led by Senator Joseph McCarthy, I had more freedom to express my views in class, without fear of retaliation, than conservative students have on many campuses today.

Speech codes are a widely used tool taken right out of the fascist toolbox.

If they can’t control how you act, then they’ll control how you speak. If they can’t control how you speak, then they’ll control how you think.

And if you act, speak, or think contrary to their demands, you will be punished. -Sean Davis Go To Site

What these 20 scientists have done with their letter is the worst kind of irresponsible advocacy.

Attempts by powerful people to silence other scientists, especially in this brutal fashion, is a recipe for stifling scientific progress and for making poor policies. -Judith Curry Go To Site

One person close to Ms Wild said she had also been warned that more personal attacks against her were to come. The BHP Billiton spokesperson called the campaign “highly personalised and unfair”.

Students at one of the oldest and most prestigious boys schools in the United States could soon face expulsion for a single "misplaced" joke, according to a draft "anti-bias" policy circulating among school administrators and obtained by the Washington Free Beacon.

St. Albans, whose alumni include vice presidents and two current U.S. senators, is considering a crackdown on "harmful" speech that prioritizes the impact of the speech rather than the intent of the speaker.

"It is the impact of hate speech, rather than the intent of those perpetrating it, that is of utmost importance," the draft policy states. As such, boys could be expelled "even in the case of a single expression, act, or gesture"—including "misplaced humor," which the policy says "should be reported immediately to the student’s adviser."

Leftists Petition

Remove Conservative Classmate From Campus

Students at Point Park University are petitioning administrators to remove Logan Dubil, their conservative classmate from the school, after the undergraduate student appeared in media criticizing the university's “Misgendering, Pronoun Misuse, and Deadnaming Policy."

The petition, created by "Max," currently has 396 signatures.

"We need to remove Logan Dubil from campus as well as others like him who refuse to respect other people pronouns," the petition reads, referencing the university policy that requires students to classmates' preferred pronouns.

A student who said women were born with female genitals and the difference in physical strength between men and women 'was a fact' is facing disciplinary action by her university.

Lisa Keogh, 29, who studies law at Abertay University in Dundee was reported to university chiefs by her classmates after she said that women were not as physically strong as men.

The mature student, who is in her final year, is now facing a formal investigation by the university for the alleged 'offensive' and 'discriminatory' comments.

An Iowa State University instructor’s syllabus warned students that anti-Black Lives Matter and pro-life viewpoints are “grounds for dismissal.”

Instructor Chloe Clark’s English 250 syllabus includes a “giant warning” advising students that only certain views would be permitted during her classes. “I take this seriously,” she notes at the end of the warning.

“The same goes for any papers/projects,” Clark’s statement continues, “you cannot choose any topic that takes at its base that one side doesn’t deserve the same basic human rights as you do (i.e. no arguments against gay marriage, abortion, Black Lives Matter, etc.)”

A New Zealand university student body voted this week to reject a pro-life club on campus. Aukland City Harbour News reports pro-abortion students have been trying to abolish the pro-life club ever since it began in 2010. This week, they succeeded. Pending legal review, the Aukland University Student’s Association said it will no longer recognize the club.

The referendum also questioned whether clubs with a “similar ideology” should be banned from affiliating in the future.

Academia In The 2020's...

"An Island of Repression in a Sea of Freedom."

Any philosophy that says “and it’s invalid to disagree with us. And if you express an opinion/idea/analysis contrary to ours you are a hater who hates” is a totalitarian philosophy.

The left is weak and pathetic, but if they bully hard enough they can fool people into thinking they’re strong and serious. Trying to redefine language everytime people catch on to how shitty they are is one of their standard tricks.

The SPLC’s retaliation was vicious and effective.

On Oct. 17, 2009, my photo appeared on the front page of my local newspaper, the Tennessean, with the headline “Carol Swain is an apologist for white supremacists.”

"There is more than one way to burn a book. And the world is full of people running around with lit matches."

Scientists Circa 2021: Shut Up Dissenters...

"I thought scientists would not get on board with the denial-of-free-speech movement. I was absolutely wrong, 100 percent so."

The Left is “negative.” It dismisses “every aspect of our cultural capital” with the language of brutal invective: accusing every defender of human nature and sound tradition of “racism,” “xenophobia,” “homophobia,” and “sexism.”

Like 1984’s “two minutes of hate,” this language tears down, intimidates, and can never build anything humane or constructive—it is nihilistic to the core.

Diversity offices, the very places that were supposed to address bigotry and harassment, have been weaponized and repurposed to catch and cull all who disagree.

Ideas That Are Forbidden

Pass our ideological purity test, or shut up...

The right to speak freely is not the same as the right to rob others of their voices.

Understanding this argument requires an ability to detect and follow nuance, but nuance has largely been dismissed from the debates about speech raging on college campuses. Absolutist postures and the binary reign supreme. You are pro- or anti-, radical or fascist, angel or demon. Even small differences of opinion are seized on and characterized as moral and intellectual failures, unacceptable thought crimes that cancel out anything else you might say.

No one should have to pass someone else's ideological purity test to be allowed to speak.

Rather than engaging with sincere questions about whether irreversible genital mutilation and radical chemical intervention are moral and medical best practices, especially for children, liberal ideologues simply ostracize dissenters as not "woke" enough.

"Forced diversity, casual hatred for straight white men and ostracism of conservative blacks and gays have become commonplace.

In the pursuit of diversity for the sake of diversity, echo chambers, which only breed radicalism, have created the perfect climate where voices can be silenced."

Inherently Unhealthy And Distorted...

Any set of rules for political discourse that subordinate the merit of an argument to the identity of the person advocating it is one that is inherently unhealthy and distorted.

Reification–the post-modern tactic of asserting a counterfactual and then acting on it as if it were true–is one of the most potent weapons in their arsenal, leaving their opponents battling phantoms while the citadel is sacked by barbarians.

Banning The Criticism Of Faculty, Departments, And Programs ...

Perhaps one of the few benefits of the COVID-19 pandemic is that it has imposed a “digital transparency” on many events that previously took place in secret and now can be recorded using conferencing technology such as Zoom.

This is the case with a March 1, 2021 meeting of the Portland State faculty senate, at which an egregious example of the New Censorship occurred.

The senate passed a resolution banning the criticism of faculty, departments, and programs and also planned additional restrictions on the academic freedoms of the “unwoke.”

Smearing an opponent is a handy way of avoiding having to address their points.

Activists used zoom-bombing recently as a tactic to disrupt and attempt to ruin an online debate on systemic racism hosted by the Bruin Republicans at UCLA.

Nazi youth then showed up and disrupted Lessing's classes. Lessing was forced to give up his academic chair the following year.

Three professors co-teaching an online course called “Medical Humanities in the Digital Age” at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs recently told their students via email that man-made climate change is not open for debate, and those who think otherwise have no place in their course.

American universities have been described as islands of intolerance in a sea of freedom.

Beginning in 2003, software engineer William Connolley quietly removed the highly inconvenient references to the global cooling scare of the 1970s from Wikipedia, the world’s most influential and accessed informational source.

It had to be done. Too many skeptics were (correctly) pointing out that the scientific “consensus” during the 1960s and 1970s was that the Earth had been cooling for decades, and that nascent theorizing regarding the potential for a CO2-induced global warming were still questionable and uncertain.
