A representative for the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals explained why the organization wants people to change the way they speak about their pets.
Jennifer White, a senior media officer at PETA, spoke on Good Morning Britain with Piers Morgan and co-host Susanna Reid about using the term “pet” to refer to one’s domestic animals.
According to White, the animal rights organization feels “pet” is a derogatory term and suggested people should stop using it since it is not animal-friendly language.

The owners of the most prominent vegan restaurant chain in Los Angeles were found to be raising and "harvesting" animals at their Northern California farm. A blind man claims he and his blind pal were verbally “accosted” by a self-proclaimed animal rights activist while they were at a bar with their guide dogs.
Amit Patel, a disability activist, took to Twitter Sunday to detail the drama at the Portsmouth Marriott Hotel in the UK after he spoke at an awards ceremony that gives recognition to animals and humans.
“Last night: two blind guys & our dogs at a bar, having a quiet drink,” Patel tweeted. “We then get accosted by aggressive women screaming that we’re cruel for having Guide Dogs.”

Attacks on small businesses by vegan activists are on the rise, according to the Countryside Alliance. Death threats, stoked by social media and encouraged by international groups of activists, have caused butchers and farmers to "live in fear."
Marlow Butchers, in, Ashford, Kent, was targeted earlier this month by activists who daubed red paint on the doors and windows of the shop...
"They want to close us down and people are threatening to smash the windows or petrol bomb the store. We live in fear and we’re up worrying at night - they are terrorising us."
Tim Bonner, Chief Executive of the Countryside Alliance told The Telegraph: "There's been an escalation of attacks on butchers, markets, and even abattoirs and it's an extension of animal rights campaigns we have seen around other areas, using the same tactics including online abuse.
"They usually attack small independent businesses rather than taking on the big boys - it's quite cowardly."

A family has settled a lawsuit against People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (Peta) after it took a girl’s unattended dog and put it down. The legal outcome ends an attempt to in effect put Peta on trial for euthanising hundreds of animals each year.
Wilber Zarate from Virginia had sued the group for taking his daughter’s chihuahua from a mobile home park on the state’s eastern shore and euthanising it before the end of a required five-day grace period.
Zarate alleged Peta operated under a broad policy of euthanising animals, including healthy ones, because it “considers pet ownership to be a form of involuntary bondage”.

Between 30,000 and 40,000 farm-raised minks were released into the wild near Eden Valley, Minnesota, earlier this week when burglars—presumably animal rights activists—cut the fence to a mink-pelt farm and opened the cages holding the mammals, letting them run into the wild...
Farm-raised minks aren’t really able to make it in the wild. Many of the minks died once released because of the heat. The ones that were recovered alive were haphazardly thrown into pens, which disrupted their social groupings and drove the minks to kill one another.
Rubin plotted attacks with like-minded criminals. She carried gasoline meant to destroy private property. She participated in arson. After an October, 2001, firebombing, which destroyed a horse corral in California, Rubin left her fellow terrorists and slipped back into Canada, where she eventually went “underground.” -Brian Hutchinson

'There really wasn’t anything they weren’t willing to call me and to say.

Animal rights group PETA may go to extreme lengths to save animals from the slaughterhouse but the Virginia-based organization's animal shelter killed nearly 2,000 stray cats and dogs at its shelter in 2013. The Center for Consumer Freedom released its annual review of PETA's Norfolk shelter and it shows a surprising 82 percent euthanization rate.

What happens when the Earth Liberation Front comes to town? Colorado residents are grappling with that question in the aftermath of 200 minks being released from a local breeding farm by animal rights activists associated with the group. Rather than “liv[ing] out their lives along the Little Snake and Yampa Rivers,” as the activists had hoped, most of the animals now face an early death.

An animal welfare group intent on sending a message in support of veganism hid until closing time then poured red paint over the Iowa State Fair's butter cow... Iowans for Animal Liberation claimed responsibility for the attack in a news release emailed Sunday night, saying members hid in the cavernous Agriculture Building on Saturday night and emerged after the fair closed for the day. They then broke into a refrigerated room where the sculpted cow and other butter sculptures are displayed and poured red paint over the cow.

The FBI and local authorities confirmed Monday they are investigating vandalism that self-styled animal-rights “anarchists” claimed to have done last week at San Diego’s only furrier shop, as well as at the homes of the store’s owners. The Animal Liberation Front, which the FBI has labeled a domestic terror threat, has taken credit for the damage at the Furs by Graf store in Clairemont and at the owners’ East County residences.

Animal rights charity PETA killed almost 90 per cent of dogs and cats placed in the care of the shelter at its Virginia headquarters last year, it has been revealed today. An animal rights activist, Camille Marino, has pleaded guilty to trespass and unlawful posting of a message with aggravating circumstances, The Detroit Free Press reported. Marino was arrested in May when she chained herself to the doors of the library at Wayne State University. She had been posting messages online in which she said that a Wayne State researcher who works with animals -- whom she named, listing his home and office addresses and phone numbers -- should be tortured.
On Friday, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie posted a video showing him smashing a spider on his desk in front of a group of visiting school children... This isn't the first instance of a high-profile politician killing an insect on film. In 2009, President Barack Obama swatted a fly during a televised interview. President Obama's fly-killing provoked a similar response from PETA, which released a statement dubbing it an "executive insect execution" that criticized peoples' thoughtless treatment of insects.

Vlasak has defended the use of violence on two grounds. On moral grounds, he believes that any tactics – ranging from threats and break-ins to sabotage and even assault or murder — are legitimate given the suffering exploiters inflict on animals, the impossibility of ending their misery through legal systems that cater to exploitation industries and define animals as property, and the moral imperative to save animals from the violent clutches of exploiters. On pragmatic grounds, Vlasak believes that the use of violence would be an effective intimidation tactic and would stop numerous individuals from exploiting animals while preventing others from ever embarking on that heinous path. -Dr. Steven Best

In the wee hours of March 7, 2009, David Jentsch was startled out of his sleep by the sound of an explosion. The UCLA professor ran outside to find his car engulfed in flames. The fire quickly spread to a nearby tree before firefighters were able to douse it. The next day, self-described members of the “Animal Liberation Brigade” claimed responsibility for the firebombing. They also warned ominously: “we will come for you when you least expect it and do a lot more damanage [sic] than to your property.”
In the letter, Dina Kourda, on behalf of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals, asks the city's street maintenance superintendent to place the sign at the site of the crash on Walnut and Yale avenues. The sign would read, "In memory of hundreds of fish who suffered and died at this spot," to remind tractor-trailer drivers of their responsibility to the animals who are "hauled to their deaths every day," according to the letter provided by PETA.

One female Harlan worker told the Observer: "When you arrived in the morning, you would have to queue for up to five minutes to get through the gates. Their loudhailers were deafening. They would scream at you that you were a puppy killer and would bang on your car. It was horrible. I was left shaking for hours afterwards." A male colleague was equally affected: "It is part of their methodology to equate animal work with paedophilia. If they find out your name, you will appear on their website as a paedophile. It is disgusting." Another Harlan worker found out that his neighbours had all been sent notes claiming that he was a rapist.
