Among the highest-paid of his relatives was brother Erasmo Berrios, who was hired by the state in 1984 and retired a year ago. His pay topped out in 2010 at $146,343.30, including overtime, working for the Illinois Department of Transportation...

A Cook County judge and her 3-year-old son were carjacked at gunpoint late Thursday night in Humboldt Park.

  Police said, around 11:30 p.m. Thursday, a 52-year-old woman was pulling into a garage of a home in the 1500 block of North Campbell Avenue, with her 3-year-old son in the back seat, when two men approached.

  According to an internal CPD report obtained by CBS 2’s Brad Edwards, the woman, who is a Cook County judge, was forced out of her car at gunpoint, and robbed of her purse and phone.

  She was able to remove her 3-year-old son from the back seat before the carjackers took off in her 2018 Subaru Crosstrek...

A committee of Cook County Democrats has chosen a former state transportation official who just paid off a pending ethics fine to replace a commissioner who was ousted after his tax evasion conviction. Stanley Moore was chosen Thursday after a dozen people made presentations in an effort to replace former Commissioner William Beavers. Among those seeking the post was former County Board President Todd Stroger.

The combative Cook County commissioner stands accused of diverting more than $225,000 from campaign coffers to feed a casino-gambling habit and for other personal use without reporting it. Jury selection began Monday, and opening statements are expected later this week... Beavers also is accused of failing to declare that he took more than $68,000 in campaign money and put it in a city fund to double the monthly pension he got for his years as an alderman to more than $6,000.

CHICAGO -- A former Cook County employee has been indicted on federal charges of public corruption for allegedly steering four no-bid contracts to acquaintances and soliciting payments in return. Eugene Mullins, a former director communications for former Cook County President Todd Stroger, was charged with wire fraud and soliciting kickbacks. He was arrested Thursday and later pleaded not guilty to the charges.
