I cannot begin to tell you how much it sickens me that the Southern Poverty Law Center, a group I supported many years ago because of its work against the Klan, has become a key player in labeling legitimate conservative political and religious groups as "hate groups." -William A. Jacobson
A man accused of shooting a security guard inside the downtown Washington headquarters of a conservative Christian lobbying group pleaded guilty Wednesday in connection with the shooting.
Corkins pleaded guilty to one federal count of crossing state lines with guns and ammunition. He also pleaded guilty to one count of intent to kill while armed and one count of committing an act of terrorism with the intent to kill.
Family Research Council president Tony Perkins on Thursday said the shooting at the conservative Christian organization’s Washington, D.C., headquarters was an act of terrorism and he accused the Southern Poverty Law Center of fostering the climate that allowed the crime to occur.
The shooting of a security guard Wednesday at the Family Research Council (FRC) has spurred a torrent of heated accusations from both sides of the gay rights debate about claims that the conservative organization is a “hate group.”
The National Organization for Marriage (NOM), one of the nation’s leading opponents of same-sex marriage, told The Hill the shooting was a direct result of the Southern Poverty Law Center’s decision in 2010 to place the FRC on its list of hate groups for its rhetoric on gays.

The Virginia man who planned a mass shooting based on a leftwing group’s “hate map” of conservatives got sentenced to 25 years in prison today, though federal prosecutors had recommended 45 for what they call an act of terrorism.
Floyd Lee Corkins stormed into the headquarters of the Family Research Council (FRC) last August and carried out the politically-motivated shooting based on a target list from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC).

Family Research Council (FRC) officials released video of federal investigators questioning convicted domestic terrorist Floyd Lee Corkins II, who explained that he attacked the group’s headquarters because the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) identified them as a “hate group” due to their traditional marriage views.
“Southern Poverty Law lists anti-gay groups,” Corkins tells interrogators in the video, which FRC obtained from the FBI. “I found them online, did a little research, went to the website, stuff like that.”
The Washington Examiner’s Paul Bedard reported that Corkins, who pleaded guilty to terrorism charges, said in court that he hoped to “kill as many as possible and smear the Chick-Fil-A sandwiches in victims’ faces, and kill the guard.”

Prosecutors recommended in court papers that the Herndon man who shot a security guard at the Family Research Council be sentenced to 45 years in prison. Floyd Lee Corkins II went to the conservative organization's Chinatown-area headquarters on Aug. 15 with the intention of killing as many people as he could, according to court documents.

Sources told Fox New that after guard took away his gun, the suspect said, “Don’t shoot me, it was not about you, it was what this place stands for.”
The suspect, a 28-year-old male from Virginia named Floyd Corkins, “made statements regarding their policies, and then opened fire with a gun striking a security guard,” a source told Fox News. AP later confirmed that Corkins is a liberal activist who volunteers with a left-wing group in the D.C. area.

The Family Research Council shooter, who pleaded guilty today to a terrorism charge, picked his target off a “hate map” on the website of the ultra-liberal Southern Poverty Law Center which is upset with the conservative group’s opposition to gay rights.
He told the FBI that he wanted to kill anti-gay targets and went to the law center’s website for ideas. At a court hearing where his comments to the FBI were revealed, he said that he intended to “kill as many as possible and smear the Chick-Fil-A sandwiches in victims’ faces, and kill the guard.”

The SPLC calls the Family Research Council a “hate group.” This puts it in the same league as the True Invisible Empire Knights of the Ku Klux Klan, the Aryan Nation, the Supreme White Alliance, the Old Glory Skinheads and, of course, the American Nazi Party.

The shooting at the Family Research Council’s headquarters in Washington, D.C. was the result of the liberal Southern Poverty Law Center stoking the flames by labeling the conservative Christian organization as a hate group, the group’s president Tony Perkins told reporters Thursday.
The suspect, 28-year-old Floyd Corkins of Virginia, was charged with assault with intent to kill after he allegedly shouted “I don’t like your politics” and shot an unarmed guard in the arm. Investigators found ammunition and 15 Chick-fil-A sandwiches in the suspect’s backpack, according to the Associated Press.

The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) of Montgomery, Alabama was first established decades ago to combat the Ku Klux Klan and racism in general through its work in helping impoverished blacks fight discrimination. In recent years, however, SPLC has exhibited a tendency to label anyone or any group that disagrees with them as "racist" or a "hate group," says a Cornell Law School professor.

A suspect in the shooting of a security guard at the headquarters of a downtown D.C. conservative Christian lobbying firm criticized the group's anti-gay stance before opening fire, a source tells ABC7. The shooting took place at the offices of the Family Research Council... A source tells ABC7's Scott Thuman that the suspect is Floyd Corkin, 28, of Virginia. Sources say Corkin walked into the Family Research Council and said “It’s not about you, it’s about the policy,” and then shot the guard.

Corkins made some sort of negative comment about the organization before the shooting, but the reference was not specific, said another law enforcement official who also spoke on anonymity because of the ongoing investigation. Though authorities did not publicly reveal a motive, advocacy groups across the ideological spectrum condemned the violence, with some casting it as a hate crime. "Today's attack is the clearest sign we've seen that labeling pro-marriage groups as `hateful' must end," Brian Brown, the president of the National Organization for Marriage, said in a statement.
The SPLC is a discredited, left-wing, political activist organization that seeks to silence its political opponents with a "hate group" label of its own invention and application that is not only false and defamatory, but that also endangers the lives of those targeted with it.

When you heard the terrible news from Arizona, were you completely surprised? Or were you, at some level, expecting something like this atrocity to happen? Put me in the latter category. I’ve had a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach ever since the final stages of the 2008 campaign. I remembered the upsurge in political hatred after Bill Clinton’s election in 1992 — an upsurge that culminated in the Oklahoma City bombing. And you could see, just by watching the crowds at McCain-Palin rallies, that it was ready to happen again. -Paul Krugman
