Using data for the period 1980 to 2009 and controlling for state and year fixed effects, the results of the present study suggest that states with restrictions on the carrying of concealed weapons had higher gun-related murder rates than other states. -Quinnipiac University economist Mark Gius, in journal Applied Economics Letters. Missouri Governor Jay Nixon repeatedly denied knowing anything about Missouri illegally sharing its citizens private CCW information with the federal government, even after his own head of Missouri Highway Patrol contradicted him in a public hearing. Now we’ve learned that Nixon not only knew about the violation of Missouri law, but he was thanked in a letter by Janet Napolitano. Go To Site

After the Aurora movie theater happened, the New York Times and others sneered at the idea that an armed citizen would have made a difference. They said, "Then there would have been two people shooting in the theater, which would've been worse." I'm thinking, "What could possibly be worse?" -Dan Baum Go To Site

The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) recently warned residents about new ways criminals are gaining access to peoples’ homes and luring them into carjackings...

According to MPD, carjackings are so common that it’s no longer safe to exit a vehicle if it’s involved in a fender bender. MPD described “bumping into your car” as a means of “how carjackers lure victims.” After your vehicle is bumped, “you might be tempted to pull over — only to have your car taken,” the police warned. “Stay inside with the windows shut and the door locked and, if you feel a threat, drive to the nearest police or fire station.”

MPD’s message also offered some safety tips to help Minneapolis residents avoid becoming victims of crime. For example, they advised people who carry weapons to keep them on their person. “The tool or weapon must be at hand at the moment needed (not in a bag, under the car seat or in the glove compartment) and you have to know how to use it properly,” the email said.

The inimitable Maricopa County, Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio is calling on armed citizens to take action during mass shootings in order to save lives. With 250,000 Arizonans currently carrying concealed weapons permits, the "Toughest Sheriff in America" called on "an armed posse" to "take some action before the law enforcement officers show up and save lives in the process."

“I watched President Obama tonight, heard what he had to say about confronting terrorism and I didn’t find his words encouraging at all. I know our military will do the right thing and will do the right thing to protect us. But as far as the homeland goes in the United States of America, he has no effective plan apparently.

So what I’m asking all my citizens to do, all my law-abiding citizens, I’m asking you to help me and our fellow law enforcement officers by arming yourselves. I want you to get a carry permit. I want you to learn how to use your weapon properly, safely…and I am calling on every able bodied person that is of legal age to do so.

As law enforcement, we can’t protect every single one of you; we can’t be there all the time, we can’t be everywhere all the time, especially in rural areas where we have limited resources. So as such I am encouraging you, strongly, to arm yourselves.” -Randy Kennedy, Chief of Police, Hughes Springs TX

Detroit’s police chief says he believes the number of armed citizens in the city would deter would-be terrorists from carrying out attacks similar to those in Paris for fear of return fire. “A lot of Detroiters have CPLs (concealed pistol licenses), and the same rules apply to terrorists as they do to some gun-toting thug, Chief James Craig said, The Detroit News reported. “If you’re a terrorist, or a carjacker, you want unarmed citizens.”

Have you wondered why, in such a target rich environment as a suburban shopping mall two weeks before Christmas, the shooter at the Clackamas Town Center only managed to kill two people before dousing his own lights? Part of the reason was a dodgy gun. But as is being reported by kgw.com, part was also due to the fact that, gun-free zone or not, Jacob Roberts was confronted by Nick Meli who was armed and has a concealed carry permit. -Dan Zimmerman Go To Site

All licensed handgun owners in Ulster County should carry their pistols. That’s the message Thursday from the Ulster County Sheriff. Ulster County is located about two hours north of New York City. “In light of recent events that have occurred in the United States and around the world I want to encourage citizens of Ulster County who are licensed to carry a firearm to please do so,” wrote Sheriff Paul J. Van Blarcum in a Facebook post.

More guns are needed at NFL games to keep fans safe, according to the nation's largest police union -- which recently asked the league commissioner to let certain firearms owners pack heat on Sundays. The National Fraternal Order of Police has asked the NFL to lift its ban on fans carrying guns at games, at least for retired and off-duty law enforcement officers who hold permits to carry concealed weapons.

Jin graduated from the University of Texas last year with a degree in violin performance... Using the social media hashtag, #CocksNotGlocks, participants are encouraged to wield dildos to demonstrate the absurdity of campus carry.

Meli took cover inside a nearby store. He never pulled the trigger. He stands by that decision. "I'm not beating myself up cause I didn't shoot him," said Meli. "I know after he saw me, I think the last shot he fired was the one he used on himself."

"I know the sense of helplessness that people feel. I know the urge to arm yourself because that's what I did. I was trained in firearms. I walked to the hospital when my husband was sick. I carried a concealed weapon and I made the determination if somebody was going to try and take me out, I was going to take them with me."... On February 5, 1995 during a "60 Minutes" interview, she commented she'd get an "out right ban" if she could while discussing the assault weapons law. "If I could have gotten 51 votes in the Senate of the United States for an out right ban, picking up every one of them... Mr. and Mrs. America, turn them all in. I would have done it. I could not do that. The votes weren't here."

When right-to-carry laws had a surge in popularity in the 1990s, a common liberal argument against them was that this would lead to an increase in gun violence. Stands to reason, right? More guns means more gun crime. Except it didn’t happen. Gun violence overall has declined, horrible incidents like Friday’s notwithstanding. Economist John Lott has argued in his book, More Guns, Less Crime (written with David Mustard) that the concealed carry laws actually reduce crime.

Dawkins had a superficial wound in his left arm, but Henderson was shot in two places: his left buttock and his right hip. “I feel horrible. It doesn’t feel good. It makes you think about life’s decisions, and how you should live your life,” Henderson said in an interview with the Star-Banner at the jail on Saturday afternoon. Hours after his release from the hospital, Henderson, who talked about the pain he feels in his buttock and hip, said the plan was to “barge in, get the money and leave.” He said “he never expected anyone to be armed.”
