As for patients, even George Orwell could not have devised the Liverpool Care Pathway, revealed last week as a state death management package. It has nurses shouting at visitors not to give dying relatives a sip of water for fear it might wreck the hospital's deaths target. No one was doing anything "wrong", since everything was done by the book.
NHS doctors are prematurely ending the lives of thousands of elderly hospital patients because they are difficult to manage or to free up beds, a senior consultant claimed yesterday. Professor Patrick Pullicino said doctors had turned the use of a controversial ‘death pathway’ into the equivalent of euthanasia of the elderly.

The current report states that as many as 13,000 patients have been killed off needlessly by NHS hospitals over the past few years. However this number does not include the shockingly high 130,000 patients each year who are put to death by means of the so called "Liverpool care pathway" by being drugged, dehydrated and starved to death as Channel 4 News reported: "Evidence of patients desperate for a drink of water, nurses shouting at relatives who try to help and staff who appear to lack any compassion at all."
MANCHESTER, England (CNS) -- State-funded English health service hospitals are being paid millions of dollars to implement a controversial end-of-life patient-care protocol that critics say is a "euthanasia pathway." Figures from 72 National Health Service hospital trusts show that more than 12.4 million pounds ($19.93 million) has been awarded over the past three years to hospitals that have met targets for adopting the Liverpool Care Pathway for dying patients.

He said: ‘The lack of evidence for initiating the Liverpool Care Pathway makes it an assisted death pathway rather than a care pathway. ‘Very likely many elderly patients who could live substantially longer are being killed by the LCP. ‘Patients are frequently put on the pathway without a proper analysis of their condition. ‘Predicting death in a time frame of three to four days, or even at any other specific time, is not possible scientifically. This determination in the LCP leads to a self-fulfilling prophecy. The personal views of the physician or other medical team members of perceived quality of life or low likelihood of a good outcome are probably central in putting a patient on the LCP.’ He added: ‘If we accept the Liverpool Care Pathway we accept that euthanasia is part of the standard way of dying as it is now associated with 29 per cent of NHS deaths.’

Hospitals may be withholding food and drink from elderly patients so they die quicker to cut costs and save on bad spaces, leading doctors have warned. Thousands of terminally ill people are placed on a 'care pathway' every year to hasten the ends of their lives. But in a letter to the Daily Telegraph, six doctors who specialise in elderly care said hospitals across the UK could be using the controversial practice to ease the pressure on resources.

Professor Patrick Pullicino said doctors had turned the use of a controversial ‘death pathway’ into the equivalent of euthanasia of the elderly. He claimed there was often a lack of clear evidence for initiating the Liverpool Care Pathway, a method of looking after terminally ill patients that is used in hospitals across the country.

Severely sick and disabled newborns in National Health Service (NHS) hospitals in Northwestern England are being sent home or to hospices to die of starvation or dehydration, the Daily Mail reports. The babies are being assigned to the Liverpool Care Pathway (LCP) for end-of-life care, meant for terminally-ill adults and the elderly. The system includes removal of food and fluid tubes, but it takes up to 10 days on average for the babies to die. Permission from parents is required to put their children on the death path.

One doctor has admitted starving and dehydrating ten babies to death in the neonatal unit of one hospital alone. Writing in a leading medical journal, the physician revealed the process can take an average of ten days during which a baby becomes ‘smaller and shrunken’. The LCP – on which 130,000 elderly and terminally-ill adult patients die each year – is now the subject of an independent inquiry ordered by ministers.

Concerns have been raised that the Liverpool Care Pathway program is being abused. This program originated to help the terminally ill die with dignity, but now there are claims it is being abused. Yesterday, the Christian Medical Fellowship (CMF), an influential group of Christian doctors, called for a stop to financial incentives paid to hospitals to put patients on the Liverpool Care Pathway... For example, husband and wife, Charles and Hilda Futcher, died within ten days of each other after they were prescribed sedatives on the program without family consent. In another case, 68-year-old David James died on New Year's Eve because his family lost their legal battle to stop the hospital from withholding needed treatment... Senior cancer doctor Prof. Mark Glaser accused NHS managers of using the LCP to "clear beds and achieve targets" while supporters strongly refute that the LCP is a form of “euthanasia.”
