Meridian attorney Rod Amos who ran in the Democrat Primary for mayor was arrested early Sunday by Meridian police. Department spokesman Capt. Dean Harper confirmed Amos was arrested just after 3 a.m. and faces several charges, all misdemeanors. U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson, saying that D.C. Mayor Marion Barry had violated the public trust, yesterday sentenced Barry to six months in prison and ordered him to pay a $5,000 fine for his conviction of cocaine possession.

Jackson said Barry "has given aid, comfort and encouragement to the drug culture at large, and contributed to the anguish that illegal drugs have inflicted on this city."

WASHINGTON, June 13 — Representative Patrick J. Kennedy pleaded guilty on Tuesday to driving under the influence of prescription drugs last month in an early morning car crash near the Capitol. Mr. Kennedy, a Rhode Island Democrat who is a member of one of the nation's most closely watched political families, was sentenced in District of Columbia Superior Court to court-ordered drug treatment, a year of probation and a $350 fine.
