[Oct 2016]: Gun sales hit the 17th consecutive monthly record in September, and overall sales are up 27 percent compared to the same period last year, according to figures from the FBI. A total of 1,992,219 background checks were processed through the bureau's National Instant Criminal Background Check System for the month of September, nearly 200,000 more than the 1,795,102 conducted in September 2015.

Gun production has more than doubled over the course of the Obama administration, according to a new report from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives... The number of guns manufactured increased by 18 percent during the George W. Bush administration, while the Clinton administration actually saw a 9 percent reduction. But under President Obama, gun production has spiked 140 percent to 10.8 million firearms in 2013, the most recent year for which data is available.

On July 7, the FBI announced that June 2015 was the “busiest June” for gun purchase background checks ever. According CNN Money, there were “1.53 million background checks,” which is the highest number of checks in a given June since the FBI began recording the number of checks in 1999.

Normally, Black Friday sees an increase in gun sales, but the figures from this Black Friday compared to last year’s are astonishing; there was a 59% increase in gun sales from 2011 to 2012. For the month of November, there was a 49% increase from 2011 to 2012. The FBI's National Instant Criminal Background Check System ran 981,798 background checks for California gun sales this year by the end of November. This number exceeded the total sales for all of 2011.

The economic impact of the firearms industry is up 66 percent since the beginning of the Great Recession, providing an unexpected shot in the arm for the economy, according to a new study. The National Shooting Sports Foundation claims that the economic impact of firearm sales — a figure that includes jobs. taxes and sales — hit $31 billion in 2011, up from $19 billion in 2008.
