William Bradford, the Governor and head of the colony documented the tragic outcome of this failed experiment with communism in his diary. The results of this first collective were disastrous and led to famine and starvation with scores dying. Deciding that they’d had enough of this failed system, and to avoid further inevitable devastation, another system was tried, free enterprise – capitalism.

State Symphony Orchestra, in which he served as associate conductor.

The life expectancy of East Germans has risen sharply since their state was reunified with the more prosperous West in 1990, a new study shows. Reunification added 6.2 years to the life of men in the former East and 4.2 years to their female counterparts... But in a reunified Germany boys born in 2011 were forecast to live to 77.1, and girls to 82.9. Mr. Vogt cited improvements in medical treatment and an improved standard of living as the reason.

The Coast Guard detained 1,275 Cubans on boats intercepted before they reached Florida in the 12-month period ending Sept. 30. That was the highest number since 2008.
