Anti-Wall Street protesters in Oakland have vandalized a Whole Foods store and shattered windows at two downtown banks. Windows were shattered at a Bank of America branch, where someone also spraypainted "Class War" and "Shut it Down," near Lake Merritt and a Chase bank at 20th and Webster streets.

Spray painted messages were found in 21 locations around Boston. This appears to be the work of anarchists associated with the Occupy Boston group.

One bank branch on Long Island had 13 of its windows smashed. Two others had their outdoor A.T.M.'s smeared with glue. And at least three of the banks that were damaged overnight Tuesday were painted with graffiti protesting animal testing: ''BNY Kills Puppies,'' ''Stop the Torture'' and ''Investors in Murder.''

Occupy Oakland protesters claimed victory after they shut down one of the nation's busiest shipping ports - escalating a movement whose tactics had largely been limited to marches, rallies and camps. In a five-hour stand-off protesters vandalised businesses and smashed bank windows, as they tried to shut down the city - and police appeared to respond using tear gas and flash bang grenades.

After 12 attempts in 25 years, Congress finally repeals Glass-Steagall, rewarding financial companies for more than 20 years and $300 million worth of lobbying efforts. Supporters hail the change as the long-overdue demise of a Depression-era relic... On Oct. 22, Weill and John Reed issue a statement congratulating Congress and President Clinton, including 19 administration officials and lawmakers by name. The House and Senate approve a final version of the bill on Nov. 4, and Clinton signs it into law later that month.
