Young and healthy upper-middle-class Americans, when huddled into encampments without modern sanitary facilities, developed a number of diseases, ranging from scabies to lice to tuberculosis, with surprising rapidity. In addition, populations of rats and other vermin exploded. What lessons can be learned about the fragility of public health, and the complacency bred by modern sanitation? -Glenn Reynolds
"They are defecating on our doorsteps," fumed Catherine Hughes, a member of Community Board 1 and a stay at home mom who has the misfortune of living one block from the chaos. "A lot of people are very frustrated. A lot of people are concerned about the safety of our kids."

Organizers said problems included the lack of capacity for a growing population, not enough resources, no enforcement of "community values" and serious drug abuse, resulting in emergency calls due to overdoses. From Monday into early morning Tuesday, police logged several fights, two attempted officer assaults, several intoxicated people and port-a-potties overflowing onto the street.

And as I spoke to Michael Glaser, a 26-year-old Chicagoan helping lead winter preparation efforts, a physical fight broke out between a cleaner and a camper just feet from us. “When cleanups happen, people get mad,” Glaser said. “This is its own city. Within every city there are people who freeload, who make people’s lives miserable. We just deal with it. We can’t kick them out.”

Walsh confirmed the tummy troubles. “Someone did vomit on the carpet in our lobby,” the spokesperson said. “There were about 20 protesters for about roughly six hours.”

But as the protest ground on for a 23rd day, it was evident that there were challenges. Zuccotti Park smelled like an open sewer -- with people urinating and defecating in public. And some couples have taken advantage of the free condoms distributed by organizers to do the nasty in full view of other protesters. “It kinda makes me think of what Woodstock must have been like,” said one protester, Sarah, 19 from the Upper West Side. “I haven’t hooked up with any guys ... but one of my friends did have sex in a tarp with a guy last night.”

LOS ANGELES—The reek of urine and unwashed bodies hung over the former Occupy Los Angeles camp Wednesday as masked sanitation workers hauled away 25 tons of debris from the barren lawns around City Hall. .. "It's so contaminated, it doesn't even make sense to sort it out," said Jose "Pepe" Garcia, 49, superintendent of the city's north central sanitation district. A dozen city sanitation workers were suited up in white coveralls, gloves and boots after reports that there might be a lice or flea infestation, Garcia said.

The chorus began quietly at a recent strategy session inside Zuccotti Park, with a single cough from a security team member, a muffled hack between puffs on his cigarette. Then a colleague followed. Then another. Soon the discussion had devolved into a fit of wheezing, with one protester blowing his nose into the mulch between clusters of tents.

“Both carts have had items stolen, have had their covers vandalized with markings and graffiti, as well as one of the carts had urine and blood splattered on it,” said Councilman Carl DeMaio. The damages will likely require at least a complete cleaning if not a replacement of the cart covers, DeMaio said.

At the very beginning of the video, a distraught occupier complains about having been assaulted twice (“once with contaminated vomit“), and of other assaults in the camp occurring; including sexual assault. And the community’s failure to properly address the incidents. Directly after, another member points out the videographer (a non occupier), leading another member to attempt to censor the man behind the camera. All of which, mind you, is taking place in a public park.

As the downtown encampment persisted in recent days despite clean-up orders, city officials deemed it a public nuisance. "We'd received complaints from the (concourse) facility staff regarding human and animal feces, urination, drug use, littering and damage to city property," Long said.

(CBS/AP) NEW YORK - Without running water or working toilets, the crowded anti-Wall Street encampments across the country are not the most pleasant-smelling places to live. Nor are they quiet, with drumming and chanting echoing through the air at all hours of the night. That's why police and neighbors in some cities are starting to lose patience with the protesters, who are preparing to settle in for the winter months.

City sanitation workers yesterday were forced to pick through a filthy pile of property seized from Zuccotti Park including dirty hypodermic needles, moldy food and glass-littered, broken gadgets. “I pick up garbage [for a living], and these were some of the worst smells I’ve ever experienced,’’ one worker grumbled to The Post.

On Wednesday, police arrested another camper after he allegedly hurled a glass bottle at a Department of Public Works employee who was cleaning the camp area. The employee said his crew was preparing to do routine power-washing and disinfecting of the walkways and walls in the plaza’s bocce ball courts. Before throwing the bottle, the city worker said the suspect was sitting at the entrance of the walkway and told him, “You are not coming in here,” Fong said.

"Fascist pigs! I am a protester!" cried the loudest bullhorn user, Debra Lujan, 34. Within minutes, the two on bullhorns and the rest of those who didn't leave - about 20 - were being handcuffed with plastic wrist ties and put in line for police vans. They were all driven away within an hour. City Department of Public Works crews using 10 trucks had the camp disassembled and the sidewalk washed down by 1:15 a.m. "It went pretty smoothly," said Officer Albie Esparza.
