Going Without The Police

Los Angeles, Minneapolis, New York, Philadelphia and other liberal cities are facing a dramatic rise in violence which has forced the city leaders to reevaluate their stance on defunding the police, a Sunday report says.

A looted business owner in Seattle told Fox News Wednesday he called the police at least 19 times after apprehending a robber but no one arrived on the scene...

The Seattle Police Chief dismissed the claim, saying her department “observed from a distance.”

Protesters that engulfed the nation’s streets in summer 2020 following George Floyd‘s death clamored for taking funds away from police departments in favor of other community servies. As a result, a number of police departments across the U.S. had their budgets reduced, The New York Times (NYT) reported. Go To Site

For seven months, Dylan Carrico Rogers slept in his bike shop with a shotgun. TriTech Bikes, located in the Montavilla neighborhood of northeast Portland, Ore., where Rogers grew up, had been battered by three break-ins, two nearby shootings, and countless instances of vandalism.

Portland’s serially understaffed police force was nowhere to be found. And in the face of $25,000 of stolen bike parts, TriTech’s insurance company was ready to jump ship. “They said, ‘if you claim another one, we’re just gonna drop you,’” Rogers told National Review.

“So I’m paying $1,200 every three months to be told that I have to replace [everything] on my own dime. And then at the same time, the cops don’t show up. So we’re just in a free-for-all.”

Portland residents calling 911 for emergencies are facing a dramatic increase in hold times, with officials saying that the system is "broken." According to The Oregonian, starting in the late spring, the riot-gripped city has faced a sharp increase in 911 calls placed on hold for two minutes or longer.

The national standard for 911 hold times is 15 to 20 seconds, but according to data from the Portland Bureau of Emergency Communications obtained by The Oregonian, 574 of the 911 calls in the city had to wait on hold for more than five minutes in July...

On Sept. 4 during a shootout at a Pearl District restaurant, callers had to wait more than 7.5 minutes before a dispatcher answered. The increase in both the number of calls to 911, and the longer hold times, comes as the city experiences an increase in homicides...

The rise in violence also comes as the city faces resignations of a portion of its law enforcement officers amid efforts to defund the police.

Yes, We Mean Literally Abolish the Police

Oops.

The first thing to point out is that police officers don’t do what you think they do.

They spend most of their time responding to noise complaints, issuing parking and traffic citations, and dealing with other noncriminal issues.

We’ve been taught to think they "catch the bad guys; they chase the bank robbers; they find the serial killers," said Alex Vitale, the coordinator of the Policing and Social Justice Project at Brooklyn College, in an interview with Jacobin.

But this is "a big myth," he said.

Biden: Funding Should "Absolutely" Be Redirected From Police...

Joe Biden said in an interview Wednesday that some funding should “absolutely” be redirected from police, amid calls from some in his party to "defund the police" in the wake of the protests across the country.

“But do we agree that we can redirect some of the [police] funding?” Barkan asked Biden.

“Yes, absolutely,” said the former vice president.

Murder and other crimes have surged in major cities following the efforts to defend and rein in police activity following the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis last year, according to a law enforcement report.

In Minneapolis, police activity following Floyd’s death while in custody dropped 42%, and possibly as a result, murders surged 64%, said the report from the Law Enforcement Legal Defense Fund shared with Secrets.

The report said that in 10 major cities where cops were sharply criticized, police activity dropped 48% since June 2020 and murders rose 56%.

Crime is soaring in cities where police departments have been defunded, reports Fox News.

Movements to defund the police have grown since George Floyd died in police custody in Minneapolis. Defunding means reallocating or redirecting funding away from the police department to other government agencies funded by the local municipality...

New York City has seen 76 murders this year alone, compared with 68 from the same time period in 2020. The City Council in July approved slashing $1 billion from the police budget, which included nearly $484 million in cuts and $354 million reallocated to other agencies ''best positioned to carry out the duties that have been previously assigned to the New York Police Department, like the Department of Education, the Department of Health & Mental Hygiene and the Department of Homeless Services." Another $162 million was slashed through "associated costs," the council said in a statement.

An Atlanta mayoral candidate who voted to sequester $73 million from the city’s police department budget reportedly had his car stolen by a group of young thieves this week — and wound up thanking the cops for their help...

Brown said he filed a report with the Atlanta Police Department.

“Thanks to everyone that reached out to check on me, appreciate the love and support. My car hasn’t been recovered but the situation could’ve ended a lot worse,” he tweeted Wednesday night. “Thanks to @Atlanta_Police for taking swift action to address the situation. It’s time we Reimagine Atlanta Together.”

More than a dozen NYPD cops have ditched the Big Apple to join the force in a small Florida city — part of a nationwide trend of disgruntled officers finding greener pastures in pro-police communities.

Lakeland — a community of 108,000 people 35 miles east of Tampa — mounted a social media campaign targeting NYC cops earlier this year, and in April dispatched a delegation to recruit in Times Square.

A team of criminologists has found that every 10 to 17 new cops added by a city police department can be expected to save one black person from being murdered.

The researchers looked at 242 cities over a 38-year period and concluded “that each additional police officer hired abates between 0.06 and 0.1 homicides.”
