The World Reacts To Biden's Afghanistan Debacle

"Can the world afford another three and a half years of President Biden? Britain has grown used to a strong America. Now, it must contend with a weak leadership in retreat." -Douglas Murray

President Biden says he hears no criticism from America’s allies about the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan and the collapse of the government. But the criticism in Europe, at least, is loud and persistent.

A series of disagreements, most notably over Afghanistan, have some European leaders revising their expectations about President Joe Biden, and thinking more about a future untethered to the US.

-Mark Lowen, BBC Europe Go To Site

The war in Afghanistan was a Nato war with all countries signed up to the Treaty participating, including those who joined Nato after the action began.

France suffered 86 fatalities, Germany 59 and Italy 53 and so on. Even little Estonia suffered nine. Our own death count stands at 457 and Canada’s at 158.

Yet Biden, ill-informed and reckless, has spoken and acted as if none but America was involved.

The President dismissed warnings of a Taliban takeover. His televised responses have been worrying in their ineptitude and I cannot be the only person wondering this morning if the leader of the Western world has become senile.

In the wake of the chaotic evacuation of Europeans and Afghans from Kabul airport, NATO allies worry about the reliability of the United States and the competence of President Joe Biden’s government...

European leaders expressed confidence that a steady and expert hand had returned to guide US foreign policy. “Adults were back in charge” was a common refrain.

But after Biden’s ill-planned exit from Afghanistan, criticism exploded across the continent. “It’s a failure of the Western world and it’s a game-changer for international relations,” said Josep Borrell, the European Union’s top diplomat...

All the while, Biden expressed confidence that Afghanistan would not collapse to the Taliban anytime soon. Allies were baffled.

German Reaction to Biden's Afghanistan Failure...

America’s closest allies said Sunday that President Joe Biden’s disastrous withdrawal from Afghanistan left them questioning the United States’ resolve and Biden’s leadership.

The Washington Post reports that U.S. allies are complaining “that they were not fully consulted on a policy decision that potentially puts their own national security interests at risk — in contravention of President Biden’s promises to recommit to global engagement” and that “many around the world are wondering whether they could rely on the United States to fulfill long-standing security commitments stretching from Europe to East Asia.”...

German officials blasted the Biden administration for “promising an open exchange, a transparent exchange with its allies. They said the transatlantic relationship would be pivotal” and then “paying lip service to the transatlantic relationship.”

Arab leaders reportedly joined in, claiming that the “U.S.’s credibility as an ally has been in question for a while,” and that “what’s happening in Afghanistan is raising alarm bells everywhere.”

A Catastrophe...

"Let me speak clearly and bluntly, this is a catastrophe. It is a catastrophe for the Afghan people, for the Western values and credibility, and for the developing of international relations."

European leaders reacted to the Taliban's takeover of Afghanistan with disbelief, with some let down by America's withdrawal...

"I say this with a heavy heart and with horror over what is happening, but the early withdrawal was a serious and far-reaching miscalculation by the current administration," said Norbert Roettgen, the chairman of the German parliament's foreign relations committee. "This does fundamental damage to the political and moral credibility of the West."...

"Afghanistan is the biggest foreign policy disaster since Suez. We need to think again about how we handle friends, who matters, and how we defend our interests," tweeted Tom Tugendhat, the Conservative chairman of Parliament's foreign affairs committee...

"Naturally, this has damaged American credibility, along with that of the intelligence services and of the military," said Ruediger Lentz, the executive director of the Aspen Institute in Berlin. "One can only hope that the damage to America's foreign policy leadership can be quickly contained."

Afghanistan is the biggest foreign policy disaster since Suez. We need to think again about how we handle friends, who matters and how we defend our interests. In Kabul we’ve failed our friends and ourselves. We need to think again, fast. -MP Tom Tugendhat

This tragic mess comes back to President Biden. He owns every decision – and the consequences are also his.

President Joe Biden ignored British Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s attempts to contact him for approximately 36 hours as the Taliban cemented its control over Afghanistan, a report said.

Johnson tried to reach Biden on Monday morning, UK time, but wasn’t able to get him on the phone until 10 p.m. Tuesday (5 p.m. Washington time), according to The Daily Telegraph. The lengthy wait took place as desperate Afghans swarmed Kabul’s international airport in the hope of catching evacuation flights out.

The White House had no immediate comment on the report, but on Tuesday afternoon, National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters that the president had “not yet spoken with any other world leaders” about the Afghanistan catastrophe.

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson acknowledged defeat on Tuesday after he and other Group of Seven leaders failed to persuade President Joe Biden to delay the U.S. military's withdrawal from Afghanistan.

Johnson and other members of the alliance had hoped to persuade Mr. Biden to delay the U.S. withdrawal. The G-7 leaders held a virtual meeting on Tuesday amid growing doubts that the U.S. and other Western allies will be able to safely evacuate all of their citizens and Afghan allies by month's end...

White House aides said in advance of Tuesday's meeting they expected it could be contentious, as U.S. allies have looked on with disapproval at the tumultuous American drawdown.

Senior British military officers expressed anger over the U.S. pullout, saying it exposes the hollowness of the trans-Atlantic "special relationship" — a phrase used since World War II to stress the bonds of history, friendship and shared diplomatic interests between London and Washington.

No wonder the Taliban are busy trolling the Biden Administration, posing with ice-cream cones, re-enacting the iconic flag-raising at Iwo Jima in American uniforms but with a Taliban flag, vowing to battle “climate change” and ensure women’s rights “under Islamic law.”
